Westcott Youth Club member wins National Pool Championship

Five members of two Surrey clubs: Three from Westcott Youth Club and Two from Alfold Youth Club represented Surrey Clubs for Young People, recently travelled to Coventry for the Ambition (formally Clubs for Young People) National Pool Championship, to play against participants from all over the UK.

Pool Champions

Regional & National Champions Ben Sawyer, Ellie Brown, Ben Brown

They each qualified for the Championship by virtue of winning the Surrey Clubs for Young People (SCYP) Pool Championship for their respective Age Groups back in June.

Ellie Brown, aged eleven, won the Under 12 Girl’s national title after winning the SCYP title earlier this year. This was a terrific achievement for Ellie who was initially reluctant to participate in the SCYP competition ,but after getting encouragement from club volunteers and SCYP staff  participated and shows a real skill.

Having won the SCYP event she has been eagerly anticipating the National competition for 4 months! Ellie attends Youth Club every Friday in Westcott and spends most of the session playing pool against boys who are older than her. Ellie said about the day “ It was great fun and even better as I won the National Championship. I am definitely going to participate next year.”

In the County event, Ben Brown won the SCYP Under 14 Boys title in June and competed in the Ambition Under 16 Boys event. He was up against a very strong field in the round robin stage in Coventry and battled hard but failed to qualify for the semi-final. Ben said “It was a great experience and I would love to take part again next year.”

Ben Sawyer won the Surrey CYP Under 16 Boys title in June and competed in the Ambition Under 19’s competition, that was strongly contested group competition.

Ben qualified for the semi-final in which he played against a young man who he had already defeated in the round robin stage of the competition, but he lost 2-1 on the final black in an excellent match. Ben also defeated the eventual champion in the round robin stage and so is a potential winner next season. He finished 3rd overall. Ben described the day as “a great experience playing pool against other young people from all over the UK.”

The two participants from Alfold Youth Club were two siblings, whom had won their respective age group competitions earlier in June and travelled with their youth club parent volunteer Julia Stevenson-Mant to Coventry the night before, in preparation of the following days competition. Bradley Stevenson-Mant represented Surrey CYP in the U14’s and came up against some very strong opposition in his group, Bradley plays for the Berkshire Youth Pool team and is rated in the Uk’s top three in his age group.

Tara Stevenson-Mant played in the National U14’s against five other participants in her age group and after many close matches, finished in a very credible National Runner Up, a fantastic result for Tara, whom prefers to ride her horse than play pool.

It was a long day for the young people, who, accompanied by Stuart Ryland (Youth and Community Worker) and Darren Brown (parent and volunteer) left Westcott at 6.20 am to travel by taxi and train to Coventry and arrived back after 9pm.

Stuart, Darren and the young people (who are all pupils at The Priory School) were very grateful to the generous benefactors who kindly sponsored the costs for the day. The National Pool Championship was run in partnership with the English Pool Association who provided the tournament organiser and the referees.

All participants are looking forward to next year’s Pool competition next year, when they hope to win through and represent their county again and exceed their results from this year.  All the young people who represented Surrey Clubs for Young People in the National Championships will receive County Colours.
